Annwn - Come Away to the Hills

Ivan Emke, Corner Brook, NF, Canada

Annwn is a quartet from the San Francisco Bay area who have some obvious gifts in arrangement and improvisation. Instrumentally, they are quite capable, and downright inventive in many places, although the vocals are more tentative.

Come Away to the Hills includes some of the highlights of the British folk tradition: "Byker Hill," "Matty Groves," "The Trees They Do Grow High," an instrumental version of "Tam Lin," and so on. They also present five original pieces, some of which fit nicely with the spirit of the rest of the release ("Welcome in the May" and "The Red Queen" deserve special mention).

Annwn's instrumentation includes fiddle, guitars, whistles, bass, mandolin, flute and percussion. They infuse the tradition with some rock dynamics, such as the groove on "The Blacksmith" or the reggae feel of "Down Among the Dead Men."
